Chatting with Ahmad!

Sooo...on Sunday, Ahmad came over to visit to help me learn a little lesson. Here's what went down!

I can’t do it. I can’t let go of him. I want to, but I don’t know how. I rolled over in bed and glanced at the clock. It was a little after two in the afternoon and here I was, still moping around over a breakup that happened over three years ago. What was wrong with me? He was obviously moving on, so why couldn’t I? I found it nearly impossible to get over someone that I gave everything to, someone that I built everything with. Imagine building the most perfection creation, only to have something sabotage it to the point of no repair. That’s how I felt and it wasn’t a good feeling.
Scrolling through photos on Facebook and Instagram was depressing. There were so many people in love and since I wasn’t in love, it was sickening. I was happy for my friends, yes, but I felt this pang of jealousy that I couldn’t shake off. To be completely honest, I had no one to be mad at but myself. The craziest thing about this situation is that it’s my fault that I’m still single. Guys would approach me, but because I’m so wrapped up in him, I’m in this lame ass “I-can’t-see-myself-with-anyone-else” phase. Talk about the ultimate cock block. We can call it “Typical loner Victoria” syndrome if you want to put a title on it.
I was completely fine until I went to my best friend’s wedding. Seeing her so in love with someone who loved her just as much as she loved him made me feel bitter. It was supposed to be a joyous weekend, but here I am on a Sunday comforting myself with butter pecan ice cream. I totally needed to get my life together.
My interest peaked when my iPhone vibrated next to me. I raised my eyebrow in curiosity at the sight of Ahmad’s picture on my screen. Of course he would call when I’m in one of my moods. “Thanks for calling the House of Heartbreak, this is Victoria. How can I help you?” I answered, flopping back into my pillows. I heard Ahmad chuckle on the other end. “You really need to get a grip on yourself, girl. What are you up to?”
“Oh, nothing. Just enjoying the company of bacon, rice krispy treats, and Ben & Jerry’s.”
“The sugar and fat content alone makes me cringe. I told you about comfort food.”
“You told me about a lot of food, but when will you learn that I won’t listen? You’re a trainer. I like being soft and fluffy. I’m in no rush to have a body like yours.”
“It’s about health, not necessarily your appearance. But anyway, I’m down the street, so be decent when I get there.”
“Yeah, yeah,” I mumbled, disconnecting the phone and tossing it on the bed. I sighed loudly as I bounced off of the bed and rummaged through my closet for something to wear. I hated his random impromptu visits.  My plans were to lie in bed all day with my hair standing on my head, stuffing my face with a ton of junk food. But no, my best friend was going to be here in a couple of minutes and I had to look presentable.
Although Ahmad and I were friends, it didn’t stop my mind from wandering. He’s obviously seen me at my worse (which was a complete accident that would NEVER happen again), but I always try to look my best when I see him. You never know what could happen if he wereyou knowsingle again.
I quickly pushed the thoughts aside. What was I thinking? He was happy with Whitney and I was happy for him. He went through so much during the last couple of years and I was happy that he found some kind of peace in his life. Seeing how happy he was lately made me wonder how I could get that same happiness for myself. Maybe I should ask him about it when he gets here.
After slipping on a pair of yoga pants and tank top, I quickly ran a brush through my frizzy hair and tossed on a headband to keep my poof in control. As if on cue, I heard a knock on the door as soon as I brought my snacks into the living room. I opened the door and immediately was in awe… as usual. This man was too handsome for words. Here he was leaning against my doorframe with that stupid smirk on his face, just taking my breath away. I stepped aside and let him in. “So how’ve you been?” I asked as we settled onto my leather sofa. He shrugged. “Everything is cool. The better question is how have you been? What’s with this ‘House of Heartbreak’ business you mentioned? I pray it’s not because of your ex,” he said, raising an eyebrow at me.
I looked away timidly. Being a man, I’m sure he wouldn’t understand. Having gone through something as tragic as losing the one you love, he would probably think I’m just being dramatic. “It’s hard to explain,” I said softly, turning my attention to my hands. We sat in silence for a little bit while I gathered the courage to talk about what I wanted to ask him.
“Ahmad… when you lost Camille, how did you finally get over it to move on with Whitney?” I finally asked. He chuckled and shook his head. “If I told you the actual story, you wouldn’t believe me. But it took a lot of reflection. I had to stop thinking about my feelings, especially with having a three-year-old daughter. I don’t know, it's kind of hard to explain this because our situations are different.”
“How so? I feel like I’m grieving the lost of my relationship, too.”
“But not how I did. My girl died, you and your ex had a mutual breakup. If you guys wanted to work things out, you have the opportunity to. I can’t have Camille back and I struggled with that thought the most,” he said, his eyes clouding over with sadness. I patted his hand gently.
“I didn’t mean to bring up any memories,” I said softly. From being around him for the past couple of years, I knew the pain and torture he put himself though with his memories of her.
He smiled. “Everything is good now, though. I’m dating again, business is great, and life is just taking a turn in a better direction right now,” he beamed. I gave him a small smile. This is what I was talking about. Why couldn’t I have something like that, to be happy? Why am I still crying into a pint of ice cream over someone who is obviously over me? I shoveled another scoop of ice cream into my mouth as I thought.
“What made you start dating Whitney anyway? No one could get you to go on a date,” I noted, pulling my legs underneath me. A small smirk pulled at his lips.
“I was gambling and I lost.”
“Gambling? I figured it was something that you were forced to do,” I giggled. Ahmad chuckled.
“I’m sure it was like pulling teeth for everyone to get me to go out on a date after three years. I’m just glad I decided to.”
“How are things with the two of you? I rarely see you now that you have a little girlfriend.”
“You rarely see me because work has been hectic. But everything’s great with her. I’ve been doing a lot of thinking lately.”
“About?”
“Well, I’ve been with her for about two years now. Ahmelia is completely in love with her. She even calls her mommy,” he mentioned. I smiled in awe. It was nice to see that Ahmelia was happy with the decision Ahmad made. I’m glad that she had a complete family now.
“Okay, so what have you been thinking about, genius?”
“I’ll tell you in a minute. But first, we need to focus on you and your emotional pow wow you have going on,” he said, confiscating my ice cream. My jaw dropped.
“I was still eating that!” I shrieked, reaching over to grab the pint back from him. He casually held me off with one arm. He wasn’t fazed in the slightest with my struggle, as he was much stronger than I was. With a huff, I settled back into the couch.
“Fine, you fool. Focus on what?” I grumbled, folding my arms across my chest with a pout. He gazed at me with amusement shining in his eyes for a moment before speaking.
“What exactly is holding you back from moving on?” he asked softly. I opened my mouth to speak only to be stumped on my answer. There were so many reasons that I didn’t want to move on. For starters, I had this tiny thread of hope that I held on to, hoping that things would work out on its own. That thread should have obviously been broken when I saw that he had a new girlfriend. Then there was the feeling that made me think that I couldn’t see myself with anyone else. I couldn’t even fathom the thought of giving my body or my heart to another man. I had been with my ex since I was sixteen, we had history. I sighed. It was so easy for him to move on, as if his feelings were a faucet that could easily be turned off and on.
I shrugged my shoulders with a sigh. “I really don’t know,” I admitted softly, biting the inside of my cheek.
“Do I have to force you to go on a date?”
“No. I don’t even understand why it’s so hard for me though. It’s not like I’m not attractive. It’s not like I don’t have guys asking me out. I sit around writing romance novels about people finding their happily ever after, but I neglect my own. Hell, I gave YOU a happily ever after,” I said with bitter dismay.
Ahmad looked at me and smirked. “Isn’t there some kind of quote that says life is what you make it or some shit?” he asked. I met his eyes with a confused gaze.
“Yeah, and?”
“Why can’t you create the relationship you want?”
“Because life doesn’t work that way, Ahmad. I have ideas of how love is supposed to be and how I would want love to be, but some men may not agree. They say that you shouldn’t want the perfect companion because no one is perfect. You should just accept people for who they are.”
“And you should.”
“But do I have to settle just to be in a relationship? When I set my standards, men are quick to tell me that I’m stuck up or judgmental. Just because I don’t want a smoker, drinker, or some random thug in my bed doesn’t mean that I’m stuck up. It simply means that I won’t settle for shit that I don’t want,” I stated matter-of-factly. Ahmad nodded knowingly.
“You shouldn’t feel bad for what you want. If a guy does any of those, if he truly wanted to be with you, he’d stopped. If you continue holding out, I’m sure you’ll find the guy that you’re looking for and it’ll be worth the wait.”
“But what if I never find him though? What if I never find a guy that can handle my situation?”
“Situation?”
“Yeah, my ‘situation',” I said, waving my hand in front of my whole body. Ahmad raised an eyebrow in confusion.
“You mean with your lupus or something? Or being bipolar?”
“I’m not even bipolar, you fool. But yes, my lupus.”
“Like I said, the right guy will be able to handle all of that and he will do it without complaining. You would realize that if you stopped cutting yourself off from the world. I learned that the hard way,” he said, rising to his feet.
What he was saying made perfect sense. Being stuck in the past wasn’t going to help my situation. I learned that from watching Ahmad during his grieving period as he got back on the dating scene. Maybe I just needed to trust myself and trust that things would work out for the best as long as I stuck to my guns about what I wanted.
“Where are you going?” I asked as he moved toward the door. He turned and slid his hands into the pockets of his khaki shorts.
“I have to pick up Ahmelia from Karin’s house and meet up with Whitney. Are you going to be okay?” he asked. I nodded and followed him to the door. Just as he stepped over the threshold, a thought popped into my head.
“Wait a minute. You said that you would tell me what you were thinking,” I reminded him. He smiled and nodded.
“Oh yeah, I almost forgot. I’ve been thinking…” he said, digging around in his pocket. I watched him with anticipation. When he pulled out a small black box, I felt my heart rise in my throat.
“Are you…?”
“I’ve been thinking about proposing to Whitney. I’m not completely sure, but it’s been on my mind heavily,” he said with a wink, showing me the beautiful 14-carat white gold diamond ring. I immediately became confused as everything processed in my mind.
“Why did you buy a ring if you’re not completely sure?” I asked. He grinned as he slipped the ring into his pocket.
“I think it would make for an interesting story line for book three, don’t you think?” he said with a wink and walked away before I could get another word in. I smiled and shook my head as I closed the door. I gave him his happily ever after. I think it’s past time for me to obtain my own.

Meet The Characters of Love Reborn

Hello all!

With the release date a couple of weeks away, I figure that I should introduce you to my character and give you pictures of the muses behind them. If Love Reborn were to become a movie, I would definitely choose these people to play them!

If you're familiar with Love Unbroken, then you're familiar with Ahmad Dawson. I mean, even if you haven't, I'm sure you wouldn't mind making yourself familiar. Look at him! This photo is pure sex to my eyes and I decided to use Keston Karter as my muse for my sexy Ahmad (no explanation is needed). Anyway, in Love Reborn, Ahmad goes on a journey to learn to let go of his past. Now a business man and single father, he blocks himself from love until he meets a woman that makes him feel "alive" again. He comes across a few obstacles that nearly knock him down completely, but he survives! You'll have to read for yourself to see if he gets his happily ever after though.

Whitney O'Neal is the Editor in Chief of Miami's tabloid, Hot Miami. She meets Ahmad at a party that she attended to get a story and fell for him as soon as she laid eyes on him. She goes through a lot of ups and downs with Ahmad and at one point gives up on him. Will things work out of them? Or will they just continue being good friends?

Things get a little weird when Paris Elise comes to work for Ahmad. After deciding that he needs a little help around his gym, Ahmad hires Paris to be one of his trainers in his elite A+ Fitness gym. Ahmad immediately is attracted to his new employee which causes a lot of confusion and unusual events to take place that make him question her true identity. Paris is definitely not who she appears to be...but who is she? You can find out on June 12th!

Carlos and Lynn are Whitney's sassy, witty sidekicks that keep her on her toes. You'll definitely fall in love with them through their bantering, witty comebacks, and comments! I definitely loved creating them and I'm sure you'll love them as well!

Stay tuned for little teasers here and there as I prepare for the release of Love Reborn! I'm so excited and I can't wait! Mark your calendars for June 12th. You definitely don't want to miss this!

The Art of Moving On with Writing

Hey there, love muffins! Wait, do you guys like being called love muffins? I figured that everyone likes muffins (I particularly like blueberry the best, but that's neither here or there). But it shall stick for now...unless someone organizes a protest to declare that I absolutely stop using. No? Good! Anyway, this post is about the realization that I came to yesterday and I would like to go into more depth about it. But first, let me take a selfie.

Ignore the bandage. Horrible hospital visit and blah blah blah. Anyway, back to my realization. So as I stated yesterday, I was talking with my best friend about Love Unbroken after she had read what I added and gave me her comments. I was telling her that the book was basically a bunch of analogies of my last relationship and that my "naive, childish Camille" character was actually ME in my relationship. You know, always feeling down about not being able to spend time with her man, easy to forgive just because she's happy to be around him and all that jazz. I've stated time and time again that the ending of my book represents how I felt when that relationship had ended. I felt like I had permanently lost a part of myself that I could never get back.

Writing Love Reborn was hard. I remember when I started writing it, I scrapped like four chapter ones. It took me 3 WHOLE MONTHS to write a chapter one that I was satisfied with and once I got over that hurdle, it became a little easier. As I wrote this story, I basically followed through with my character and learned some things about myself. I learned that in order to grow, you have to stop living in the past and wondering about the what ifs. You know what I'm talking about. What if I did this differently? What if I didn't do this so much? What if we had more time? Things like that. I also learned that it WASN'T my fault. Sometimes things just fall apart. Sometimes people are better off as friends. Placing blame on yourself isn't going to change the situation. All you can do is learn from your mistakes and grow from them.

Taking this journey with Ahmad was challenging, but very eye opening. For the first two years or so, I had a hard time moving on myself. I didn't want to be with anyone else. I couldn't picture myself being with anyone else. I was actually afraid of moving on because I held on to a tiny thread of hope that things would change. But life isn't a fairy tale. Realizing this, I wrote Love Unbroken to express my feelings. My ending was my wake up call to myself to let me know that there were no more chances. There was no more hope. It was gone. Dead. Finished. It was time to move on. In Love Reborn, I was finally able to get the closure I needed to move on.

It took a good while to get to the point that I'm at now, but I'm content. I'm glad that I was able to get through this with my writing. These two books are very personal to me because they helped me find myself again. I was so lost in my emotions, but it's nice to be free from them. That chapter of my life officially ended when I wrote "The End" for Love Reborn. Oh, I'm just speaking figuratively, I didn't really write "The End" because I find it to be rhetorically stupid. Like, duh, there's no more words, so I would assume this to be the end of the book. That's just me though. Anyway, to move on means to move past the hurt, past the blame, past the what ifs, and to just let go.

The most important love you can ever have is self love. If you can't love yourself, how can you expect anyone else to? Until again, love muffins!

Cover Reveal and Other Loonish Activities

Wow.

It has been forever since I have made a blog post. I think the last time I made one, I was a fetus or something. But seriously, it's been way too long! I shall never, ever, ever leave you-- wait, what was I going on about? I already forgot.

Anyway, I released the cover for Love Reborn about a week or so ago. It's definitely a piece of eye candy. I definitely can't wait to get this thing printed along with poster to go with my Love Unbroken poster. Sometimes I stare at this stuff and can't believe that these pictures, these covers, translate and depict the stories that I'm telling. These posters reflect the hard work that I've put into something that I love so much and it makes me so happy.

The original cover that I had for this was pretty and simple, but I became bored with it pretty quickly. I have the attention span of a hummingbird, I swear, it's horrid sometimes. I wanted something that would have me addicted just as much as my Love Unbroken cover, which is just absolutely sexy. Do you guys remember it?

Sorry, I started staring again. Anyway, yeah. I wanted a cover that gave me the same effect that Love Unbroken did. I think it definitely captures the story and I'm super grateful for my cover designer Laura of Bookfabulous Designs (hey girl, hey!).

I've finally finished the edits for Love Reborn today. 230 pages of grief! Although I edit other books for a living, editing my own work is SO tedious. That sounds crazy, right? That's because it is! When I edit my own work, I have to read slower because I have to read it as it's meant to be read, not what I know I should have written down. There were so many petty, tiny mistakes that were made due to typing too fast, but I caught them all (I think so anyway).

I need to start working on the rewrites for Love Unbroken. To be honest, I'm super nervous about it. What if people don't like it this time around? My biggest fear is that they won't like it and won't give Love Reborn a chance. Maybe I'm worried about the wrong thing, but being a perfectionist causes me to think about these things. I'm excited about publishing them both. I finished Love Reborn during Camp Nano, so that was pretty cool as well. As weird as it sounds, I miss Camp Nano! It was a great push that I needed to finish a book that I had procrastinated on for so long.

I think that's pretty much it for the moment. I'm releasing both Love Unbroken (re-release) and Love Reborn on June 12th, so I have a lot of work that I need to do before I'm even close to being ready! I'll catch you loons on the flip side!

The concept behind Love Unbroken

Hi readers!

This blog post is WAY overdue. I've been meaning to write this for a while now after so many people voiced their opinion about the ending of this book. Unfortunately, thanks to my Lupus, I have the attention span of a hummingbird and tend to forget things that I'm supposed to be doing. Anyway, allow me to explain myself to help you better understand why things happened the way that they did.

Love Unbroken is not a true story, but it was built on true emotions that I felt over a recent breakup. You know, hardly being able to spend time with the person I loved due to their job, feeling lonely and confused, being betrayed by friends, that sort of thing. I tend to be dramatic; this is something that I know and something that I'm not afraid to admit. I tend to paint pictures bigger than they are meant to be but isn't that the beauty of being creative? Going above and beyond? I do admit that there may have been a lot of drama in the book, but mind you, due to a lot of fighting, there was a lot of drama in my life. It kind of bothers me a bit that some people directly tried to attack me for how I wrote my story as if they didn't have drama in their late teens (18-19) and early 20s. Unless you've lived a sheltered life, I'm pretty sure you've encountered SOME kind of nonsense in your life. If you haven't, maybe you should live a little.

Anyway, about the ending. During my breakup, I began having a lot of dreams about death. It was starting to scare me because I thought that I was having premonitions of some sort so of course I consulted my good friend Google. From what I've read, dreaming about death symbolizing the end of something important and the start of something new. At that current time, a very dear relationship to me was ending and something new was bound to happen. Also, I was told that when you leave a long term relationship, you need to give yourself time to "grieve" because you've pretty much lost someone. A person doesn't have to be physically dead in order to grieve but I incorporated that into my story anyway. The ending of Love Unbroken tied my dreams together along with my grieving process. When someone physically dies, you have no choice but to force yourself to move on, right? You're not going to sit around for the rest of your life wishing that the person would come back to life and you'd wait on them until they did, right? Which is why one of my characters had to die, to emphasize that point. Had they not died and just broken up, I'm pretty sure I would've heard "Nooo, they should've stayed together! Make them a couple again!" But I didn't want to do that. Love Unbroken was closure for ME for a relationship that I lost. Because there is no going back to it, it did feel like a part of me died. So now, the surviving character is kinda forced to learn to live without this person and figure out what they want out of life on their own, which is kinda what I'm doing with my own life. I didn't expect everyone to understand my story, but I definitely didn't expect people to come for my head about it either.

Anyway, the main point I wanted to drive home with this story is to cherish the people you have. Not everyone is into material things or money. Some people spend their entire lives chasing material things and then realize why they don't have real friends to share their success with. Don't push away people who care about you because of a career. Careers come and go just like people come and go. The moral of Love Unbroken is that you can buy and have a lot of things in life, but you can't have time. Time passes whether you want it to or not. One moment you can be basking in the limelight and the next moment, you can be in the dark. In this story, one minute the couple thought they were going to be planning a wedding but instead, one of them is planning a funeral. Don't let life get in the way. Learn to find a balance and learn to properly communication and you can indefinitely have love that is truly unbreakable.

V
